assignment # 7.

for as long as there has been a human race, there have been superstitions. i believe that the reason  we have superstitions is that some people don’t think good things can happen without bad things to oppose them. therefore, they create silly superstions to feel better about themselves.

there will always be the classic superstions, like, a black cat, not to  walk under a ladder, breaking a mirror means 7 years bad luck. but, they have never been really big in my family. as for the ghost superstitions my grandmother has and will always be a firm believer.

years before my grandfather died, she told my sister and i a story of how she believes that if the deceased wasn’t ready to go, they linger on the earth until they feel ready. after my grandfather passed she seen him several times and she told us everytime she turned and ran the other way. she was scared that he was waiting to say he loved her one last time and that  she’d never see him again. and she couldn’t face that.

but, she started feeling guilty for leaving his soul trapped on the  earth so, one night when she was asleep she felt a presence in the room. she says that she could feel him and everything. she didn’t hear words but, felt hiim saying i  love you to her soul and she felt the need  to say she loved him as well out loud. she says she hasn’t seen him since.

now, i’m not sure if thats true or not. but, thats her story and she has stood by it. all i know is that people believe what they want.

 

Assignment 6.

the wizard  of oz is a classic that i’m more then sure everyone has seen. the characters are pretty much based on what everyone has inside of them. dorothy-the need for adventure. the tin man-heart and soul. the scarecrow-the oppurtunity to make the right decision. && the cowardly lion-even the most cowardly people have courage. no matter how scared, lost, dimwitted, or empty hearted, just one day could make a complete difference  in someone’s life.

The average American sees images for unattainable bodies around 400-600 times a day. Making women and young girls believe that in order to be beautiful or successful in todays society you must be thin. They are billboards, television shows, movies, even commercials promoting unhealthy ideas of beauty. Most women aren’t satisfied with the way they look. And alot of the reason comes from the way the media presents the “American Woman.” Not all of us are thin, tall, and blond. And i say different is beautiful.

Its a fact that women are supposed to be round. We are supposed to have 5% more body fat then men. But, you never see that in the media. Women should be the judge of how their bodies are supposed to look. Not the media.

Assignment 3.

The story to me is pretty much about how important wealth was to the people of that time. Their goal in life was to either get richer or marry their children into wealthy families. Everything they did was motivated by the slight chance of upping their social/class standing. Now days, things aren’t exactly as they were but wealth and who you know still plays a big role in society. After all, we are motivated to do better in life. And i don’t feel that will ever change.

Assignment 2.

English Renaissance.

Thomas More was born on February 7, 1478. he was one of two undersheriffs of the city of London, where he earned his reputation as an honest and effective public servant. he married his first wife, Jane Colt, when he was 27. He wanted to marry her younger sister but instead married Jane so she wouldn’t face the humiliation of being married second. They had 4 children: 3 daughters and a son. They also adopted an orphan girl. He educated his daughters as well as his son because he believed that women were just as intelligent as men. When Jane passed Thomas remarried a widow named Alice Middleton and adopted her daughter.

More was a scholar and a literary man. He earned a great reputation as a Christian Renaissance Humanist. He wrote the infamous Utopia which he used as an imaginary nation to discuss openly his opinions on controversial matters.

Renaissance Man.

My renaissance man is more like a renaissance woman. Jane Addams is best known as a feminist, social worker, and internationalist. She is most commonly recognized as the founder of the hull house; a place that provided aid to the poor working class families. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10th, 1931. She later died of cancer.
