The story to me is pretty much about how important wealth was to the people of that time. Their goal in life was to either get richer or marry their children into wealthy families. Everything they did was motivated by the slight chance of upping their social/class standing. Now days, things aren’t exactly as they were but wealth and who you know still plays a big role in society. After all, we are motivated to do better in life. And i don’t feel that will ever change.

Good observation. As a parent, I want my children to better themselves, not that there was anything wrong with my upbringing. I just wish them success and happiness, without the burden of financial woes! I would prefer though, that they be happily married in a small, comfortable home than unhappily married in a mansion! I’m glad the rigid rules of social status that applied to the characters in the story are not so rigid anymore!
